In this Challenge, students will learn the basics of weather terminology, becoming experts in weather forecasting. Students will use their new knowledge to forecast the weather for five different cities worldwide and predict the possibility of snowfall in each of these cities.

This Challenge focuses on the science of weather (examining topics such as: humidity, precipitation, dew point, and clouds). In the course of this Challenge, your students will read maps and collect data. After organizing this data into charts and spreadsheets, students will make weather predictions based on their evidence.
Extensions:
Students should research some or all of the following weather proverbs and explain their meaning:
1. Red Sky in the morning, sailors take warning; 2. Mare's tails and mackerel scales make tall ships take in their sails; 3. Clear moon, frost soon; 4. A year of snow, a year of plenty; 5. Halo around the sun or moon, rain or snow soon; 6. Rainbow in the morning gives you fair warning; 7. When the stars begin to huddle, the earth will soon become a puddle.
Students will practice Language Arts and writing skills by writing for free weather publications, such as THE AMATEUR WEATHER FORECASTER, WATCH OUT ... STORMS AHEAD! OWLIE SKYWARN'S WEATHER BOOK, SAFETY TIPS FOR WINTER STORMS, and WINTER SURVIVAL COLORING BOOK.
